State Tournament Results [Feb. 26, 2011]
Congratulations to Isaac Reed, 2011 WV State Wrestling 4th place finisher! Winfield did not do too bad at this year's state wrestling tournament. Chris Cochran (103), Isaac Reed (119), and Nathan Briscoe (145) all qualified to go to the "Big Dance" this year. Nathan had a tough draw and was not able to place at his weight class. Chris got the ball rolling for Winfield with a great match and a decision win over Josh Steffi of Capital HS. Isaac had the next victory win a decision over Andrew Stanley of North Marion. Chris had a tough time with then number one Lance Hill of Parkersburg South, losing by a technical fall. Chris had a better match against Cody Salamone of University but lost by decision. Isaac had a fantastic quarterfinal match pinning Kane Bender of Buchannon Upshur. Isaac's semi-final match was against number 1 ranked and eventual State Champion David Jeffery of Parkersburg South, losing by a fall. Isaac then rebounded the next day in the consolation bracket and defeated Dylan Marker of Capital by decision. In the Third/Fourth place consolation final, Isaac faced Alex Reimann of Cabell Midland. He gave it a good shot, but lost 6 - 0 against Reimann. Congratulations to all of the wrestlers on a very good showing. Team scoring was also pretty good with Winfield scoring 16 team points. Winfield finished in a tie for 25th place out of 39 teams, ahead of such teams as Parkersburg, Hurricane, and Riverside. Hopefully next year we will be able to bring more to the big event and increase our team score even more!HS - Regional Tournament Results [Feb. 19, 2011] The Winfield Wrestling team did well, but fell short of the goal to take 6 wrestlers to the state tournament this year. The Generals are sending 3 wrestlers to the State Tournament, Freshman Chris Cochran (103) took third place, Sophomore Isaac Reed (119) took third place, and Senior Nathan Briscoe (145) took fourth place. The team took seventh in the toughest region of the state, but the future looks bright with most of the team returning for next year. It was a bittersweet ending for some of our wrestlers, Senior Alex Bryant (140) had a tough draw and was not able to advance to the State Tournament, he was a good team captain and his leadership will be missed next year. Special thanks to all of our parents for their support this season, everyone did a fantastic job! Hopefully the team can do as well at Regionals next Saturday!HS - Bob Stover Classic [Jan. 30, 2011] The Winfield High School Wrestling Team looked like it would have one of the worst appearances of the season after a disastrous preliminary round that left the Generals in the 7th position with a long road to travel. The match against Hurricane was closer than the score would indicate, but Hurricane is a very tough team this year. All wrestlers were very competitive this weekend, great job!MS - Charleston Civic Center Results - [Dec. 4, 2010] The boys did really well this weekend and finished 5-2.
